The food ration bar appears as a solid, hard brick of a homogeneous composition. Killy is seen nibbling on such bars but doesn't seem like he needs to eat that much in general most likely due to heavy augmentation.

In the movie the bar has a yellowish-brown hue, and makes a sound like a lump of chalk when tapped. When put in water, it appears to dissolve and self-cook into a bread-like edible substance several times its initial volume. Upon consumption by Electrofishers, the resulting substance is described as palatable indicating a potential source of nutrition.
The bar itself is an elongated brick with dimples on the top, possibly for interlocking stability when stored or transported. Engraved on its surface are symbols indicating the preparation procedure, in which three images describe filling a container with water, breaking off a portion of the brick, then submerging the broken portion in the water yielding a larger volume of material.
